Founded on 28 May 1960, the museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting archaeological finds from the municipality of Sesimbra. Its permanent exhibition brings together objects that bear witness to human presence in the region from the Palaeolithic period to the Middle Ages, allowing visitors to explore different stages of its history.

The collection includes coins, tools, pottery, bone artefacts, ornaments and implements associated with the daily activities of ancient communities. These objects help explain the lifestyles, customs and development of the populations that inhabited the area over time.

Human Settlement in Sesimbra

The archaeological collection reveals a history dating back tens of thousands of years. The exhibition highlights the archaeological significance of this cave and the different purposes caves served throughout history. In addition to providing shelter and spaces for everyday activities, some caves may have acquired religious or spiritual significance, reflecting the beliefs and practices of the communities that used them.
