The Museum of Mechanical Music is located in Pinhal Novo, in the Arraiados area, belonging to the Union of Parishes of Poceirão and Marateca, in the municipality of Palmela. This location provides a quieter and semi-rural setting, characteristic of the region, while remaining easily accessible within the Palmela area.
This institution offers a unique perspective on the world of mechanical music, inviting visitors on an authentic sonic journey through the centuries. Since its opening in 2016, it has been dedicated to preserving, studying, and disseminating the evolution of these instruments. The exhibition path allows visitors to see and hear pieces dating from the 18th century until the mid-20th century, providing an immersive experience in the sounds that once enlivened homes and public spaces. Interactive devices throughout the galleries allow visitors to activate and appreciate the original melodies of many of the artifacts on display.
The museum's collection is the result of a private collection, started in 1987 by Luís Cangueiro, and comprises over six hundred mechanical music machines, complemented by thousands of related objects, such as phonographs and gramophones. The provenance of these pieces is vast and global, with examples originating from various European countries, as well as the United States and Japan. Among the highlights is a French barrel organ, dating from the late 18th century, which represents the oldest piece in the collection. The diversity and quantity of instruments offer a comprehensive overview of the history of mechanically reproduced music.
The museum building itself, designed by architect Miguel Marcelino, is an integral part of the experience. Its distinctive architecture evokes the form of an opaque and abstract box, with a concavity marking the entrance, establishing a symbolic parallel with a music box. This design, which earned it the classification as a Monument of Municipal Interest in 2021, creates a mysterious and inviting atmosphere. Inside, the five exhibition galleries are intelligently arranged around a central courtyard, guiding the visitor through the evolution of these remarkable musical contrivances.
