Located at Quinta do Outeiro, in the town of Seixal, Seixal municipality, the Mundet site is situated by the bay. Its position offers a view of the water, integrating it into the riverside landscape and the local urban fabric. It is an area that reflects the region's industrial history, maintaining a visible connection to the Tagus River.
Mundet left its mark on Seixal as one of the country's largest cork industries, with roots in the early years of the 20th century, around 1905, and with a reach that extended beyond borders. More than a production hub, it was a center for innovation in social policies, forging a deep bond with its workers and their families. For decades, it was intimately linked to the lives of many generations of Seixal residents, shaping the local community. Its trajectory, including a period of worker self-management starting in 1975, is a testament to its historical and social relevance until its closure in 1988.
Part of the Mundet industrial complex was preserved and integrated into a museum nucleus by the municipality. Among the buildings that remain visible and bear witness to past activity are the old workshops dedicated to cork preparation and transformation, the storage areas, and the imposing boiler buildings, namely the Babcock Boiler Building.
