The Carlos Hidalgo Gomes de Loureiro Municipal Park is located in the heart of Montijo, within the Corte Falcão neighborhood. Its central location in the urban fabric makes it an easily accessible point for those exploring the town. The park occupies a considerable area, with a rectangular shape of about 270 meters in length by 120 meters in width, totaling approximately 3.5 hectares of green space.
The history of this park dates back to a Municipal Council decision, made on August 21, 1929, which initiated its creation. Originally conceived in a traditional Portuguese style, the initial project went through periods of development and, later, abandonment. However, in 1952, the municipality recognized its fundamental importance for the quality of life of the population, prompting a complete renovation. The park was named in honor of Carlos Hidalgo Gomes de Loureiro, a prominent figure who led the municipal executive in the 1930s and was the main driving force behind its establishment.
The transformation of the park in the 1950s was entrusted to the renowned landscape architect Francisco Caldeira Cabral (1909-1992). Educated in Berlin, Caldeira Cabral was a pioneer in teaching landscape architecture in Portugal, being the author of multiple notable projects. His plan for the Carlos Hidalgo Gomes de Loureiro Municipal Park, presented in 1956 and approved in 1959, shaped the space as we know it today, with a careful integration of natural elements and structures, reflecting his distinctive vision.
The park is a green lung in Montijo, characterized by extensive lawn areas that invite rest and socialising. Its landscape is enriched by a diversity of trees from the national flora, including oaks, cork oaks, poplars, ash trees, lime trees, alders, laurels, and cedars, offering shade and a naturally pleasant environment. The design of the space integrates winding paths that meander through the vegetation, creating routes for tranquil strolls and more intimate nooks, conducive to contemplation.
Designed for well-being and leisure, the park offers various amenities for its visitors. There is a dedicated children's area, equipped to provide moments of fun and physical activity for the youngest. For those seeking sports practice, the park includes a multi-purpose court. Various garden benches are distributed throughout the space, offering places for breaks and moments of relaxation. Formerly, a glassed-in tea house marked one of the park's spots; although this structure is not currently in operation, it testifies to the place's vocation for socialising and enjoyment.
