The building dates back to the 18th century, having initially been a private residence. In 1800, it was acquired by the City Council, which remodeled it in 1806, giving it a more elegant and imposing style.
The facade includes neoclassical details such as a triangular pediment, pilasters, and balconies. The coat of arms on the pediment stands out, representing the national arms of the monarchical era.
On the ground floor, a market for essential goods such as meat and fish operated, while the upper floor served as the headquarters of municipal services and the court. It was the seat of the municipality until 1965, adapting to various functions since then.
Since 1999, the ground floor has been used as a Municipal Gallery, hosting artistic exhibitions. On the upper floor, meetings of the Municipal Assembly and cultural events are held.
Located on Rua Almirante Cândido dos Reis (known as Rua Direita), in the historic center of Montijo, the building is easily accessible and integrated into the city's cultural life.
Recognized as a Heritage of Municipal Interest, it reflects the historical and cultural richness of the region. It is a vibrant space that combines art, history, and community life.
In addition to temporary exhibitions, the building is a venue for important events and cultural activities, making it an unmissable visit for those who appreciate art and history.
