Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Setúbal > Moita > Alhos Vedros > Quinta Fonte da Prata

Location

Situated in the locality of Alhos Vedros, belonging to the municipality of Moita, this chapel is located in the area designated as Quinta Fonte da Prata. The building stands out in a large urban space, Largo das Forças Armadas, which functions as an amphitheater-like platform. This spot offers a tranquil environment, complemented by a public garden and a viewpoint, inviting a moment of pause and observation.

The chapel is delimited by a walled churchyard to the north and east, and is surrounded by one or two-story buildings, characteristic of local architecture, giving it a prominent presence in the area's urban landscape.

Origin and History

The construction of the Chapel dates back to the 16th century, with the start of works documented in 1532. It was erected by order of Cosme Bernardes de Macedo, a nobleman of the Royal Household and owner of the former Quinta de Martim Afonso. Initially dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, the temple is now better known as the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Over the centuries, the chapel underwent several interventions. One of the most significant occurred in 1966, which redefined its interior space, adapting it to the needs of the time, while always safeguarding its historical relevance. The recognition of its architectural and cultural value culminated in its classification as a Property of Public Interest.

Architectural and Artistic Elements

With a simple floor plan and eastward orientation, the Chapel's main façade displays notable original elements. Prominently featured are an oculus and, notably, a Gothic trilobed arch portal, richly ornamented with motifs echoing the exuberance of Manueline art, an interesting fusion of styles.

Inside, with a single nave, light enters softly through small side openings and the oculus. The chancel walls are adorned with two unique panels of 18th-century blue and white tiles, depicting delicate scenes of the Virgin with the Child on her lap. The wooden ceiling, divided into three planes, incorporates simple paintings that include the Portuguese royal coat of arms, adding a touch of historical and symbolic value to the space.
