The Moinho Novo dos Paulistas is located at Quinta da Trindade, in the locality of Seixal. Situated on the left bank of the Coina river, this old tide mill is integrated into the unique landscape of the Tagus estuary. Its position, built directly on the riverbed, is a testament to ingenious human adaptation to the riverside environment.
The surroundings are characteristically isolated and serene, allowing visitors to appreciate the tranquility of the waters and the natural beauty of the area, with a broad view over the bank and the river.
Originally dating from the 15th century and with significant interventions in the 18th century, the Moinho Novo dos Paulistas is a landmark in the industrial and economic history of the region. It belonged to a vast complex of tide mills that, since the 14th century, prospered in the municipality of Seixal, reaching about sixty milling units in the 16th century. This impressive network was essential for flour production and the life of the local community.
Its historical and architectural importance is recognized, being classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest). After the earthquake of 1755, the mill underwent reconstruction works, attributed to the architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira, known for his work at the Casa do Infantado.
The structure of the mill reveals remarkable engineering of the time. It is composed of three rectangular bodies that develop longitudinally, housing the milling, storage, and miller's dwelling areas. Its facades, of one and two stories, feature rectilinear and molded openings, giving it a robust and functional aesthetic, resting on a solid stone base.
The functioning of this type of mill was based on the exploitation of tides. Water was retained in large basins, or "caldeiras", through a gate that automatically opened and closed with the force of the tide. This water propelled the horizontal water wheels which, in turn, activated the millstones, allowing the grinding of cereals. Despite the short daily milling time, limited to a few hours per tide, efficiency was ensured by the high number of millstones, adapting to the natural rhythm of the estuary.
Currently derelict, the Moinho Novo dos Paulistas invites visitors on a journey through time, offering a perspective on the life and work of past generations. Its presence in the Seixal riverside landscape symbolizes human ingenuity in harnessing natural resources for sustenance. It allows for reflection on technological evolution and the importance of industrial heritage in shaping local identity.
It is a place that provides a sense of quietude and connection with history, where the stone and masonry structure still echoes the sound of the tides and the effort of those who worked there, offering a picturesque setting for quiet contemplation.
