The Mata Nacional dos Medos (Medos National Forest) is located on the Costa da Caparica, near Sesimbra, and is part of the Arriba Fóssil Protected Landscape. It is one of the most preserved and important natural sites in the region.
This area was created by order of King D. João V to prevent the sands of the dunes from advancing into the agricultural lands of the interior, forming a natural barrier against wind and sand.
"Medos" is a word that describes coastal dunes formed by the wind. These dunes play an important role in protecting the coastline, helping to cushion the impact of storms and stabilize the sand.
The Mata is characterized by a dense pine forest, where stone pine and maritime pine predominate. There are also many species of shrubs such as the sabina-da-praia (juniper), aroeira (pepper tree), carrasco (kermes oak), and medronheiro (strawberry tree), as well as aromatic plants such as rosmaninho (rosemary) and murta (myrtle).
The Mata Nacional dos Medos is ideal for hiking and nature walks. Several trails cross the area, including the Arriba Fóssil, which offers panoramic views of the sea and Cabo Espichel. The trails are of moderate difficulty, perfect for a day of natural exploration.
The Mata is a refuge for several endemic species, including rare and protected plants that only exist in this region. Visitors can observe the rich vegetation and, in some seasons, also various birds that find refuge there.
The use of boardwalks helps protect the dunes and allows tourists to walk without damaging the vegetation. It is important to respect the signposted areas and avoid stepping directly on the sand to help conserve the environment.
The Mata and its dunes face pressures such as construction, intensive tourism, and invasive species. To ensure its preservation, it is essential that all visitors respect the natural space and contribute to its protection.
When visiting, it is recommended to use the trails and boardwalks, not leave litter on site, avoid picking plants, and respect the preservation signs. The Mata offers picnic tables and places to rest, making it ideal for a family outing.
