The Church of Saint George and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade are located in the village of Sarilhos Grandes, an integral part of the municipality of Montijo. Situated in the Novo Jaime area, this architectural complex stands in a central square of the village, a confluence point for several streets, surrounded by buildings that shape the traditional urban environment of the area.
This remarkable religious complex is composed of two distinct structures, united over the centuries. Its origin dates back to the 16th century with the construction of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. This older space, characterized by a Manueline door adorned with florets and a galilee with an octagonal dome vault, demonstrates the elegance of 16th-century architecture.
Later, in the 18th century, the Chapel was integrated into the construction of the Church of Saint George, which was erected alongside an earlier temple. The church features a facade with classicizing elements and a longitudinal structure that aligns with the old chapel. This fusion of eras and styles confers unique historical and architectural value upon the building, which has been classified as a Property of Public Interest.
The interior of the temple reveals remarkable artistic richness, with details that tell stories of faith and the region. The walls of the church nave are covered with panels of blue and white tiles, dated 1740, depicting scenes from the life of Saint George, interspersed with figures of angels displaying the arms of the Order of Santiago. In the chancel, other tiles, in shades of blue, white, and yellow, illustrate biblical passages.
The vaults also deserve attention: that of the nave displays a fresco painting from 1904, signed by Pereira Cão, depicting the Exaltation of Saint George, while that of the chancel, more recent, from 1991, represents the dove of the Holy Spirit, a work by J. R. Teixeira. On the main altar and side altars, it is possible to appreciate 18th-century retables, with their characteristic gilded carvings and marbling. Furthermore, on the floor of the chancel and the chapel, there are sepulchral slabs of important figures, such as that of Rui Cotrim de Castanheira, a nobleman from the royal house of D. Manuel, engraved with Gothic letters.
