It is located in the village of Palma, north of the city of Alcácer do Sal, in Alentejo.
Palma has been documented since the year 1245, with a long history linked to the region.
The current church is registered from 1544, when it was known as the Hermitage of São Martinho da Palma.
It was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1755. For some time, masses were held in a makeshift shed. Later, the temple was rebuilt, acquiring the form it presents today.
In the 19th century, a set of tile panels was installed depicting scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist, the church's current patron saint.
Despite the reconstruction, it retains some earlier elements, such as the base of the cruzeiro (stone cross) with the date 1702.
