The Church of Santo António da Charneca is located in the locality of the same name, integrated into the municipality of Barreiro. It emerges in the urban area known as Cidade Sol, a point of reference for the inhabitants of the parish. Its position allows it to observe the daily dynamics of the community that surrounds it, conferring upon it a central role in the local context.
The construction of the Church of Santo António da Charneca, dedicated to its patron saint, resulted from a significant collective effort by the population. Its construction began in 1951 and was entirely financed through public subscription, a testament to the strong commitment of the community in realizing this temple. The work was completed in 1964, and since then, the church has remained a fundamental element for the religious and social life of the locality.
The architectural project for this church was designed by José and António Martins Cartaxo. On the main façade, which faces west, the bell tower stands out, rising on the right flank. Its frustoconical shape and tiled spire, punctuated by six openings that illuminate the interior staircase, give it an easily recognizable silhouette.
On the left side of the church body, the baptistery stands out, with a circular plan and a domed roof. The exterior base of its dome is uniquely adorned with a border of red tiles, a detail that adds a distinct touch to the architecture. The entire façade is punctuated by windows of different dimensions, which are closed by stained glass windows, contributing to the aesthetics of the ensemble.
Upon entering the church, one can observe a spacious nave, whose walls are covered by a wainscot of tiles that imitate older patterns, providing an atmosphere of tradition. The ceiling, lined with dark-toned pine wood, contributes to an atmosphere of contemplation and serenity. Three large side windows, of generous dimensions and similar to those of the main altar, were designed to allow natural light to flood the space, creating a soft and inviting illumination. The main altar, in the form of an apse, also benefits from ample windows, which ensure constant luminosity, highlighting the centrality and sacredness of the space.
