The Church of Santa Catarina de Sítimos is located in the small eponymous village, Santa Catarina de Sítimos, in the municipality of Alcácer do Sal. This place stands out for its tranquil and rural atmosphere, characteristic of the Alentejo region, offering an environment conducive to calm and contemplation, away from the hustle and bustle of large urban centers.
The church's history dates back to ancient times, with the village of Sítimos already mentioned in historical documents from 1249. It is probable that a small Christian place of worship existed in the community since that time. An interesting aspect lies in the devotion to Saint Catherine, Virgin Martyr of Alexandria, whose cult is believed to have been promoted in the region by crusaders from Northern Europe who, after the conquest of Alcácer do Sal in 1217, likely contributed to the dissemination of this faith. Over the centuries, the site evolved, becoming a chapel with cure in 1565 and, later, in 1758, a parish seat under the jurisdiction of the Order of Santiago.
The church's current construction is characterized by its simplicity and beauty. Ancient records, dating from the early 16th century, describe the chapel as having been built with stone and clay, a testament to the construction techniques of the time. Inside, the presence of a wooden altar is noteworthy, which at the time was supported by structures made of the same simple materials. This was complemented by a retable with doors, where the image of Santa Catarina was located, and behind it, there was a second retable of the same size, adding depth to the worship space.
