Located in the heart of Alcácer do Sal, more specifically in the Laranjal Neighbourhood, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça is situated in a central area of the town. Its proximity to the municipal market integrates it into daily urban life, making it accessible to those strolling through the town's streets.

Historical Background

Although the exact date of its initial construction remains somewhat uncertain, it is known that this hermitage already existed in the second half of the 16th century. Over time, it was known as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça and São Roque, playing an important role as a pilgrimage site for the faithful of Alcácer do Sal. Thus, it represents a link with the long history of devotion and tradition of the local community.

Architectural Features

The church is an example of the decorative aspect of Portuguese Baroque from the 17th century, a period of great artistic expressiveness. Externally, its main façade stands out for the simplicity of its lines, although it features some low-relief ornaments that invite closer observation. Inside, the scene transforms, revealing a wealth of details and the articulation of various arts, where gilded woodcarving plays a central and remarkable role, a striking characteristic of the Baroque period.

The structure maintains its original rectangular plan, with the main altar closely connected to the sacristy, a configuration that reflects the functionality and design of its construction period.

A Restored Legacy

Currently, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça is owned by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Alcácer do Sal, having been a legacy from the family of João Núncio. It underwent significant restoration works, which were completed in 2006. These interventions allowed for the preservation and enhancement of this heritage, ensuring that its historical and artistic characteristics remain visible to visitors.
