The sculpture "Homage to Floriculture" is located in the Bairro da Mosca, an area within the locality of Atalaia and Alto Estanqueiro-Jardia, in the municipality of Montijo. Positioned on a roundabout, this work of art marks one of the entry points to the area, serving as a prominent element for those arriving or passing through this location. Its design takes advantage of the dynamics of the surrounding space, particularly the movement of vehicles circulating there.
Conceived by the Italian sculptor Tony Cassanelli, in collaboration with Portuguese artist Jaime Carvalho, the work materializes a dynamic abstraction of a flower. The choice of material, a light-colored metal (possibly stainless steel or white), and its light structure, composed of sheets and tension rods, lend it visual subtlety. The design was specifically conceived to create an effect of constant movement, perceptible as the observer moves. The abstract geometries of the "petals" and "leaves," combined with the metal's reflections, produce a sense of fluidity and delicacy, making the sculpture a piece that comes to life with movement.
More than an artistic representation, this sculpture holds deep symbolic value. The stylized flower personifies Montijo, functioning as a gesture of welcome and hospitality for those approaching the city. The work also reflects the municipality's historical tradition of fostering the creation of synergies and relationships, both internally and externally. It is a tribute to local floriculture and, simultaneously, a representation of the spirit of collaboration and cultural development that has always marked the evolution of this dynamic land.
