The “Stone Tree” is located in the Arneiro neighbourhood, in Grândola, installed in a small landscaped area next to the houses. Surrounded by well-kept lawn, it is situated in a quiet residential area, just a few steps from the neighbourhood's main thoroughfares.
Even without a large area, this green corner stands out for its sculpture, creating a visual pause in a daily commute.
This piece of public art was sculpted from local limestone, a raw material abundant in the region. Its form evokes the trunk of a growing tree, symbolizing the connection between the urban environment and the nature that characterizes Grândola.
Although devoid of inscriptions, the sculpture serves as a reminder of the Alentejo's forest heritage, evoking traditional cork activities and the importance of trees in the local imagination.
From the ground emerges a smooth shaft, with markings suggesting growth rings, culminating in an irregular, almost organic top. The contrast between the stone's grayish-white and the vibrant green of the lawn creates a serene visual effect.
Each groove on the surface captures light differently throughout the day, offering plays of shadow that reinforce the sensation of static movement, inviting contemplation.
The alignment of the sculpture with the canopy of a small holm oak behind it highlights the idea of continuity between art and the natural landscape. It is in this framing that one of the best images emerges: the “Stone Tree” on stage, surrounded by green.
Those passing by can take the opportunity to highlight, with their mobile phone or camera, the contrast between matter and life, capturing a unique moment in the neighbourhood's daily life.
