Situated in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, in the municipality of Setúbal, the Fonte dos Pasmados is located in the Aldeia Rica area. Its location integrates into the urban environment of the locality, serving as a point of reference and architectural beauty in the center of this picturesque village, known for its landscapes and traditions.
This imposing fountain is a notable example of 18th-century architecture, commissioned by Judge Machado de Faria. Its Baroque style, with evident influence from the works of figures like Carlos Mardel, gives it a particular grandeur. The centerpiece is a polilobed basin sculpted in pink-toned marble, from which water flows through spouts emerging from two elaborate gargoyles.
The decorative ensemble of the fountain is enriched by symbolic and artistic elements. At the top, a floral vase complements the composition, while the royal emblems, discreetly integrated, underscore the importance of the construction in its time, adding a touch of distinction to its appearance.
The name "Fonte dos Pasmados" (Fountain of the Astonished) originates from the reaction of surprise and admiration that its beauty and grandeur caused in those who observed it. Popular tradition tells that those who have the opportunity to taste the water that flows from this fountain will be, in some way, forever linked to Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, adding a layer of curiosity and enchantment to the experience of visiting it.
