The Bocage Statue stands in the heart of Setúbal's Historic Centre, in a square that bears the poet's own name. This open square serves as a meeting point and a central element in the ancient urban fabric of the city. Its position lends it a particular atmosphere, framed by the traditional architecture that characterizes this historic area, inviting contemplation of the monument and the urban environment.
The monument pays tribute to Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage, one of the most notable Portuguese poets, born precisely in Setúbal. His work profoundly marked national literature, and this statue perpetuates his memory in his hometown. The choice of the inauguration date, December 21, 1871, was not arbitrary; it marks the anniversary of the poet's death, who lived between 1765 and 1805, underscoring the deep reverence for his figure.
Crafted from white marble, Bocage's statue impresses with its stature and composition. With a total height of twelve meters, the work rests on a base of four octagonal steps, from which rises a robust Corinthian-style column. Atop this column, two meters high, rests the figure of the poet. The sculptural project was authored by João Carlos dos Reis, and the stone execution was carried out by stonemason Germano José de Sales, figures who contributed to its artistic grandeur.
The inauguration of the statue represented an event of great significance for Setúbal and for the country. The ceremony, held in 1871, was attended by various personalities of the time, including the renowned writer Eça de Queirós. This monument is not merely an artistic representation; it is an enduring symbol of the city's and the nation's recognition of Bocage's relevance in poetry, a material testament to his cultural influence and the impact of his life and work.
