The old Montijo Railway Station is located in the Bairro da Calçada area, in the town of Montijo. Although it is no longer operating as a train terminal, its buildings and surrounding area are currently undergoing a redevelopment project. This effort seeks to integrate the space into a new urban context, utilizing the route of the old railway line for the creation of a cycle path. The site will now offer new green areas, inviting a peaceful stroll and a new perspective on this part of the city.
Inaugurated on October 4, 1908, the Montijo Railway Station, initially known as Aldegallega Station, was a pivotal point of the Montijo Branch Line. This line connected the city to Pinhal Novo and played a vital role in local economic development. For decades, it was the gateway for goods, with particular emphasis on the transport of livestock from the Alentejo, boosting the region's industry and commerce. The project stemmed from strong municipal commitment, which saw the railway as a driver of progress for Montijo.
The closure of the Montijo Branch Line in 1989 marked the end of an era in railway transport in the region. However, the station did not fall into oblivion. Currently, its buildings and adjacent land are undergoing a redevelopment process that aims to transform them into spaces with new functions. The ambition is to host cultural and social activities, and to support the infrastructure of the cycle path that now follows the old railway route. This investment in heritage conservation and adaptation offers an opportunity to revisit the history of the site, in a renewed and accessible environment.
