Situated on a small island in the middle of a lagoon on the Herdade da Barroca d'Alva estate, a rural area in the municipality of Alcochete. Access is difficult and crosses private property.
Only possible via a dirt road with several gates along the way. In rainy weather, it can only be reached with 4x4 vehicles. On foot, caution is required due to the presence of wild cattle.
A small circular chapel with a dome-shaped cupola. It is surrounded by two crenellated walls, giving it the appearance of a small fortress.
Very simple, with plain walls and remnants of an old altar opposite the entrance. It is not open to the public nor restored.
Of Renaissance and Mannerist inspiration. Its shape and construction are rare in Portugal and it is thought to have possibly been adapted from an old mill.
A very peaceful landscape, surrounded by trees and calm waters. Ideal for those seeking isolated places with a mysterious touch.
It is supposed to have been built in the 16th century. It was restored by Jácome Ratton in the 18th century when he leased the lands of Barroca. This place appears in several historical accounts as having always been a special and isolated site.
Vacant and without religious use. The property is private, and the chapel is in a state of abandonment, although it maintains its historical value.
The name "Ussa" may come from the ancient word for bear, perhaps linked to some local legend or miracle.
