The Seixal Municipal Ecomuseum, Naval Centre is located in Arrentela, in the municipality of Seixal, in an area that extends along the banks of the Tagus estuary. Its location offers a direct perspective on the fluvial landscape, a fundamental element for understanding the region's history and identity. Near the site, in the tidal area, it is possible to observe the remains of an ancient vessel, a physical reminder of the maritime past.
This Centre was established in a location with a rich history, where a naval shipyard once operated until the late 1970s. The choice of this site underscores the deep connection of the municipality of Seixal to the Tagus River. Over time, the estuary served as a central axis for the life and development of riparian communities, who engaged in activities such as fishing, wooden boat building, fluvial traffic, and milling, taking advantage of the tide's force. The Ecomuseum preserves and shares these memories, revealing how the river shaped local life.
Dedicated to safeguarding the fluvio-maritime heritage, the Seixal Municipal Ecomuseum, Naval Centre offers insight into the art of naval construction and life connected to the river. The space showcases the various types of vessels that once navigated the Tagus estuary. One of the most symbolic and visible elements of this heritage is the ruin of a fragata, a type of traditional boat, which remains in the tidal area adjacent to the building, serving as a silent testimony to the importance of these vessels for the region until the mid-20th century.
Inside the Naval Centre, visitors will find different exhibition spaces. One room is dedicated to long-term exhibitions, such as "Boats, Memories of the Tagus," which explores the importance of boats and riparian life. In parallel, a workshop space hosts temporary exhibitions and, at certain times, allows visitors to observe closely the dedication of artisans to the handcrafted construction of vessel models. This practical dimension offers an opportunity to connect with the techniques and knowledge linked to the naval craft.
