The Iron Noria is located on the grounds of the Comandante Conceição e Silva Basic School, in Cova da Piedade, Almada. This structure dates back to the time when the region was dominated by farms and agricultural activities, before urbanization.
The noria was used to elevate, extract, and distribute water, supplying the old Quinta (farm) of the Gomes family. It was commissioned by António José Gomes, an important milling industrialist and benefactor of the region.
Built in iron, it stands out for its monumentality. It is formed by three floors supported by eight tall pillars with rounded bases, supporting four arched rings that support the water lifting mechanism. It includes a wrought iron parapet and bears the name of the manufacturer: "Anselmo e Filhos", from Seixal.
Although there is no definitive confirmation, it is believed that the design of the noria may be linked to Gustave Eiffel's workshop, given the sophisticated style of the structure.
Classified as a Property of Municipal Interest in 1982, the noria is an example of how iron technology was introduced into architecture. It is one of two norias that supplied the property.
The noria is integrated into the school grounds, but can be seen from the outside. It is located near Estrada das Barrocas, being a testimony to the agricultural and industrial past of the region.
