The Sarilhos Grandes Bandstand is located in the eponymous locality, which belongs to the municipality of Montijo. It is situated in the Novo Jaime urbanisation, a landmark in the area, and occupies a central position in Praça da Liberdade. This location allows it to naturally integrate into the community's daily life and be an easily accessible point for visitors to the parish.
The history of this bandstand dates back to 1928, the year it was originally erected in Largo das Palmeiras, in Praça Gomes Freire de Andrade, in the city of Montijo. Its construction was due to the dedication and collective effort of the members and friends of the Banda Democrática 2 de Janeiro, with the support of the population who contributed through public subscription and cultural events. In 1955, to preserve this heritage in the face of the construction of a new market in Montijo, the Municipal Council proceeded with its dismantling and offered it to the parish of Sarilhos Grandes, where it was reinstalled. Since 1957, its management and conservation have been the responsibility of the Academia Musical União e Trabalho, AMUT, ensuring the continuity of its cultural function.
Since its reinstallation in Sarilhos Grandes, the bandstand has maintained its role as a reference stage for the community. It is a privileged location for holding musical and cultural events, hosting performances by bands and folk groups, especially during local festivities. This emblematic space contributes to the identity and cultural dynamism of Sarilhos Grandes, inviting moments of encounter and sharing around arts and tradition.
