Located in the heart of Comporta, municipality of Alcácer do Sal, the Parish Church stands in a wide square, which serves as a traditional meeting point in the locality. This space, still unpaved, conveys a sense of authenticity and tranquility, framing the building in an environment that evokes the history and character of the region. The church is surrounded by a housing complex that, in the past, was a workers' neighborhood, lending the area a genuine atmosphere deeply rooted in the local community.

Architecture and Historical Context

The Parish Church of Comporta, also known as St. Peter's Church, is an example of religious architecture notable for its simplicity and plainness. Its style, characterized as "plain" (chão), incorporates Baroque and Pombaline elements in a restrained manner. The main facade, with its vertically elongated rectangular openings and pilasters marking the corners, lends it a discreet dignity.

A detail to observe on the facade is the date of 1789, inscribed in stonework above the portal. Although the origin of this inscription is uncertain, its presence suggests a long history and the eventual existence of previous structures on the same site, connecting the building to a past that dates back, at least, to the 18th century.

Interior and Artistic Elements

Upon entering the church, descending a few steps, one discovers a unique space that invites observation. The nave and the chancel articulate harmoniously under a barrel vault, which finishes the ceiling with elegant simplicity. The central point of the interior is the main altar, adorned with painted and gilded carving, a detail that contrasts with the exterior austerity and reveals the artistic richness of the sacred space. Laterally, the altar has niches for images and narrow doors that provide access to the throne.

The choir loft, with its wooden balustrade and pilasters with a subtle gilded work, completes the composition. On the brick tile floor, it is possible to find tombstones, silent testimonies of past generations that contribute to the historical atmosphere of the place. Natural light enters through side windows, some with modern stained glass, which offer a contemporary touch to this temple with secular roots.
