The Park is located in the town of Chão Duro, in the municipality of Moita, within the urban area known as Bairro da Remoa. Its position on a west-facing slope provides a view that opens onto the Tagus estuary. This significant green space integrates strikingly into the heart of the town, dividing it and contributing to its urban landscape.
Inaugurated in 1973, this Park is recognized as the first urban park designed in Portugal, marking an important point in the history of national landscape architecture. Its conception is by Professor Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, a prominent figure who imbued the project with a avant-garde vision on the interaction between public space and the environment. The Park's design reflects a deep attention to environmental issues, seeking a harmonious integration of nature into the urban fabric.
With a green area of approximately 4 hectares, the Park offers a naturalist environment, characterized by extensive lawns and a rich variety of trees providing coolness and shade. The space is punctuated by various water features, including serene lakes fed by a stream with small dams. A notable waterfall, built with marlstone, features three cascades that culminate in a circular lake. At the highest point of the Park, the presence of an old windmill stands out as a singular architectural element, which has been utilized to offer a unique perspective of the surrounding area.
The diversity of botanical species is a fundamental aspect of the Park, with riparian vegetation adorning the banks of the watercourses and lakes, and various trees, such as oaks, pines, poplars, and eucalyptus, distributed throughout the different zones, underlining the original landscape integration.
The Park offers several areas dedicated to leisure and recreation for its visitors. It includes a play and recreation space, the "Boa Viagem Playground", whose design pays homage to Moita's maritime traditions and its intrinsic connection with the Tagus estuary. One of its central elements is a multi-functional tower designed to evoke the shape of a traditional vessel, inspired by the "O Boa Viagem" varino.
In addition to activity spaces, the Park also invites tranquility, with numerous benches and nooks for rest and contemplation. It also includes a hexagonal bird aviary, which complements the natural richness of the site and offers another point of interest for visitors.
