The Chafariz do Botequim is located in Quinta da Salema, a residential area in Charneca de Caparica, belonging to the municipality of Almada. This urban element is set on a semicircular platform, carefully paved with stone, which integrates harmoniously into the surrounding environment. Its position in the urban fabric offers a tranquil landmark for those exploring the area.
Dating from the 20th century, the Chafariz do Botequim features a structure of utilitarian architecture and simple aesthetics. It has a semicircular plan with a rectangular back, flanked by two pilasters, and topped by a circular pediment resting on a frieze. Its central spout flows into a rectangular tank, maintaining its original function as a water source. The ensemble is complemented by a wall with half-moon benches, inviting rest. A detail that captures attention is the figure of a stone friar, strategically placed in front of the fountain, lending a unique and symbolically interesting touch to the site.
Built in 1932, the Chafariz do Botequim represents an important vestige of the hydraulic architecture of the time, bearing witness to the evolution of public infrastructures in the region. Its initial function as a public water supply source remains to this day. In 1993, this element underwent restoration, a milestone that underscores the importance of its preservation for the memory and heritage of Charneca de Caparica. The fountain is a living reminder of past times and the appreciation of elements that, while functional, enrich the identity of the urban space.
