The International Centre for Contemporary Medal is located in Quinta da Fidalga, a green area within the Cavaquinhas urban development, in Arrentela, which belongs to the municipality of Seixal. This cultural space occupies a restored historic building within the quinta itself, set in an environment that invites tranquility and discovery. Its location offers a perspective on Seixal's urban surroundings, while also providing a haven dedicated to art.
This center is entirely dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of medallic art, a form of artistic expression with a rich history that continues to evolve. Through its facilities, the venue invites visitors to explore the vitality of contemporary artistic creation in this field. It is a meeting point designed to foster knowledge sharing among artists, scholars, and the general public, both nationally and internationally.
The creation of the International Centre for Contemporary Medal reflects the Seixal municipality's commitment to medallic art spanning over two decades. This work has been internationally recognized, with the municipality hosting significant biennials, exhibitions, and workshops, culminating even in a world congress of the International Federation of the Medal. A large part of the collection on display is the result of donations from sculptors who participated in the biennials held in Seixal, including an important collection donated by sculptor João Duarte, a prominent figure in the creation, teaching, and dissemination of this art in Portugal.
The center features various facilities designed to support and disseminate the art of the medal. It includes a room dedicated to temporary exhibitions, allowing for a rotation of works and themes. Furthermore, it has spaces for holding workshops and studios, a specialized documentation center for research, and an area for the permanent collection. The existence of an outdoor leisure area complements the facilities, making the center a suitable place for research and the transmission of knowledge in the universe of contemporary medallic art.
