The Sines Arts Centre is centrally located in the city, marking the transition to the historical area. It is situated at the intersection of Rua Cândido dos Reis, which once led the way towards the bay, and Rua Marquês de Pombal, which defines the boundary between the old core and the newer Sines.

This site has a history linked to the performing arts in the city, having previously been occupied by the Vasco da Gama Cinema-Theatre and the Teatro do Mar (Sea Theatre).

Striking Contemporary Architecture

Designed by architects Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus, the Sines Arts Centre building is a notable work of contemporary Portuguese architecture. Its design earned it significant distinctions, including the AICA/MC Award in 2005 and recognition as a finalist for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award in 2007.

The structure is distinguished by the contrast between more enclosed facades, clad in Lioz limestone, and large glazed surfaces that offer glimpses of the interior activity. This duality reflects the building's integration into the urban context, acting as a symbolic "gateway" to the historic center. Inside, materials such as white marble and the exploration of natural light create an environment of great spatial purity.

Spaces and Cultural Vocation

The Arts Centre serves as the main driving force for cultural life in Sines, bringing together various functions in a single location. It houses the Municipal Library, the Municipal Archive, an Exhibition Centre, and an Auditorium.

These spaces allow for a varied program throughout the year, covering visual arts exhibitions, concerts, theatre plays, book presentations, and other initiatives. The center has a particular focus on promoting contemporary art and also develops activities aimed at different audiences, including actions within the scope of educational and cultural services.
