The Lousal Ciência Viva Center is located in the village of Lousal, Grândola municipality, within the Bairro dos Quartéis (Barracks Neighborhood). This location offers a unique setting, placing it at the heart of a community once shaped by mining activity, allowing visitors to feel the atmosphere of a place with a remarkable industrial history.
The building housing the Ciência Viva Center has a rich history of its own. It corresponds to former facilities of the Lousal mining complex, where essential operational spaces such as the geology office, the oil warehouse, the timekeeper's office, and the miners' changing rooms were located. This requalification preserved the original architecture, transforming it into a space dedicated to scientific and technological dissemination, a link between the industrial past and the future of knowledge.
Inside the Center, visitors are invited to explore various areas of science in a practical and engaging way. With exhibitions and interactive modules, the space covers domains such as Geology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Graphics. Through practical and immersive modules, such as the virtual cave or the 'experimentarium', it is possible to deepen the understanding of scientific concepts in an accessible and dynamic manner.
Complementing the indoor experience, the Lousal Ciência Viva Center offers the possibility of an outdoor route through the local landscape. This walking tour reveals the geological setting of the region, including the former open-pit mining operation. It is an opportunity to directly observe the marks of mineral extraction and understand how geology shaped not only the landscape but also the history and life of the Lousal community.
