The Horse Fort or Fort of Saint Theodosius is strategically positioned on the western coast of Sesimbra bay, in the municipality of Sesimbra, Setúbal district. Situated on Ponta do Cavalo (Horse Point), it offers a privileged vantage point over the vast Atlantic Ocean and Sesimbra cove. Its unique location, sheltered by the hillside and close to the water, gives it a distinctive character, set within a coastal landscape that combines the strength of the cliffs with the serenity of the sea.
This bastion rises in the area known as Castelo (Castle), referring to its proximity and historical connection to the iconic Sesimbra Castle, although physically located at the base of the hillside that defends it, close to the waterline. From the fort, it is possible to appreciate the bay's dimensions and the coastline's configuration, crucial elements for its original defensive function.
Built in the mid-17th century, more precisely in 1648, under the orders of D. João IV, the Horse Fort was a fundamental piece in the network of coastal fortifications erected during the period of the Portuguese Restoration of Independence. Its main mission was to safeguard the port and the fishing community of Sesimbra against maritime attacks, whether from privateers, pirates, or enemy fleets, especially the Castilian ones. Its alternative name, Fort of Saint Theodosius, is a tribute to Prince D. Teodósio, son of D. João IV.
This fortress played a vital role in protecting the territory and its people over centuries, adapting to the challenges and defense needs of the time. Although it suffered the impacts of the 1755 Earthquake, it was subsequently recovered and kept operational, testifying to the resilience of Portuguese military architecture and its strategic importance in coastal defense.
The architecture of the Horse Fort is a notable example of the period's defensive constructions, adapted to the rugged topography of the coast. It features an irregular polygonal plan, with thick, robust walls that have withstood the impacts of time and the sea. Originally, it would have been equipped with artillery platforms and support facilities for the military, such as barracks and warehouses, essential for the garrison's autonomy.
Today, its remaining structures invite contemplation. Although not a large fort, its striking presence in the landscape is undeniable. The fort offers visitors the opportunity to imagine the times when cannons guarded the horizon and to feel the sea breeze that has blown over its walls for centuries, connecting it to Portugal's rich maritime and military history.
