It is located in the Arrábida Natural Park, in the Serra dos Pinheirinhos, near Sesimbra, at an altitude of 217 meters. The cave is easily accessible.
Lapa do Fumo reveals traces of human occupation from the Neolithic period to the Islamic period, spanning about 5,000 years of history. It was used as a habitat, necropolis, and place of refuge.
Inside the cave, there are limestone formations, such as stalagmites and stalactites, and various archaeological remains, including ceramics and ancient tools. Noteworthy are pieces of ceramics decorated with geometric designs, bone and stone utensils, as well as Islamic coins and human remains.
Excavations show different periods of occupation, such as the Neolithic, the Late Bronze Age, the Roman period, and the Middle Ages, with emphasis on the burials of ancient times, using the ritual of red ochre.
The cave is about 300 meters long and is accessible to everyone, including families and groups of friends. During guided tours, tourists can learn about the various civilizations that inhabited the region.
