The Sesimbra Castle, also known as the Moorish Castle, is located in the parish of Castelo, in Sesimbra, district of Setúbal. It stands in a strategic position on a cliff, offering stunning views over the sea and the surrounding landscape. Classified as a National Monument since 1910, it is an important landmark of Portuguese history and culture.
The castle area has been inhabited since prehistoric times due to the fertility of the land and its proximity to the Tejo and Sado river estuaries. The site was important as a natural anchorage for peoples such as Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans, evidenced by archaeological finds such as coins, amphorae, and tombs. The initial structure of the castle was built by the Muslims and later adapted by the Christians during the Reconquista.
The castle was conquered by the forces of D. Afonso Henriques in 1165 and rebuilt in 1201 by order of D. Sancho I, who granted privileges to encourage the repopulation of the region. During the reign of D. Dinis, the village was elevated to town status and the castle benefited from improvements to its defenses.
From the 14th century onwards, the castle's importance diminished, especially with the growth of the town by the coast. During the Discoveries, Sesimbra became relevant for shipbuilding and supplying vessels. The 1755 earthquake significantly damaged the castle, marking the beginning of its strategic decline.
The castle, located at an altitude of 240 meters, has an irregular plan with crenellated walls, towers, and bastions built to adapt to artillery. The Keep is one of the highlights, with an impressive vault on the upper floor. Inside, there is the Church of Nossa Senhora do Castelo, dating from 1160 and restored in 1721, as well as cisterns and vestiges of the old Town Hall.
The castle offers unique panoramic views, encompassing the Sesimbra bay, the Setúbal peninsula, and even Cabo Espichel. Its location allows for a peaceful walk, ideal for those who appreciate history and nature. It is currently well preserved and is a must-see in the region.
Since the 20th century, especially with the development of tourism, the castle has been the target of conservation works, being in good condition. It is a historical space that combines natural beauty with a rich cultural heritage, perfect for exploring with family or for those seeking a moment of tranquility.
