Situated in the locality of Coina, which integrates the Palhais and Coina area, in the municipality of Barreiro, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is located at a point marking the urban limit of the village. Its position, accessible from National Road 10, allows it to be easily observed and integrated into the local community's landscape.
The history of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios dates back to ancient times, with records suggesting the existence of a hermitage dedicated to Saint Sebastian at this very location as early as 1553. By 1731, its current designation, Hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, was already in use, and the property was associated with the distinguished Quinta de São Vicente, belonging to D. Joaquim de Pina Manique. The devastating earthquake of 1755 caused severe damage, leaving the structure partially in ruins. However, in the 20th century, the chapel underwent extensive reconstruction and restoration, thus reopening its doors for worship and perpetuating its presence in the region's heritage.
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios exhibits an architecture that reflects the Vernacular Pombaline style, characterized by its sobriety and solid masonry construction. Inside, simplicity is the dominant feature, with the decoration enhanced by stuccoes featuring reliefs. On the exterior, the frontage deserves attention for its details: an elegant parapet, complemented by quoins with pinnacles and relief pendants, which adorn the corners of the facade.
One of the most distinctive and historically relevant features of the chapel is its architraved colonnaded portico. This element is not only a striking architectural detail but also a vestige of the temple's original construction. Its preservation over the centuries offers a direct link to the chapel's past, inviting contemplation of its history and its ability to withstand time and the events that shaped it.
