Location

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Atalaínha is located in the village of Barra Cheia, in the municipality of Moita. The site is situated on an elevated point, offering a wide panoramic view of the surrounding region and even, in some spots, views over the Tagus estuary. A large area can be found in front of the chapel, preceded by a staircase flanked by smaller buildings, giving the space a peculiar atmosphere.

History and Devotion

The devotion to Nossa Senhora da Atalaínha, venerated here, has deep roots, dating back to ancient times, at least from the 15th century. It is a place of ancestral pilgrimage, whose origin is associated with an old legend. It is said that the Virgin appeared on top of an 'aroeira' tree, next to a spring that, for this reason, became sacred.

This miracle is said to have led to the construction of the first temple on the site, where an image of Our Lady was placed. By the beginning of the 16th century, the veneration was already quite significant. The tradition of the cult is manifested annually in celebrations marked by the influx of processions from various localities and numerous pilgrims, keeping alive a heritage of centuries.

Elements of the Sacred Precinct

The precinct of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Atalaínha is not limited to the main building; it also includes elements of historical and symbolic value, such as three processional crosses and the Holy Spring. The main processional cross, made of Lioz stone and dating from the 16th century, is notable for its construction. It features a dome resting on four columns and displays sculptures, including Christ crucified and a representation of the Pietà.

There are also two other smaller processional crosses, which mark the boundaries of the once sacred space. The Holy Spring, with its circular structure and unique covering, has been a point of attraction for devotees over the centuries, associated with the legend of the Marian apparition.

Architecture and Sacred Art

The facade of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Atalaínha, with its sober appearance, is enhanced by a large choir window, placed above a porch with three arches and an iron railing. The interior of the temple, with a single nave, has a vaulted ceiling and a choir. The walls of the nave are covered with 18th-century blue and white tile panels, depicting scenes from the life of Our Lady, giving the space a particular atmosphere.

In the chancel, an 18th-century altarpiece stands out, in the Joanine style and crafted from exotic wood. On the main altar, below the niche of the image of Our Lady, there is a sculptural ensemble in gilded carving, typical of the magnificence of the Joanine period. This ensemble includes symbolic elements such as angels supporting national emblems and a medallion with the Marian monogram.
