The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is located in the Bairro do Primeiro Torrão, an area of urbanization integrated into the locality of Caparica, in the municipality of Almada. Its presence establishes a landmark in this zone, which maintains a strong connection to the maritime and fishing history of Costa da Caparica.
This location offers a perspective on the community's development and its relationship with the coastal environment, characteristic of this part of the Almada coastline.
The construction of the current Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição dates back to the years 1880 to 1882. This masonry temple was erected on the site of a previous, much more modest structure, which was made of wood and had a thatched roof.
It is particularly relevant that the predecessor of this church was built by the first settlers of Costa da Caparica. They were predominantly fishermen, originally from Ílhavo and the Algarve, who settled here, highlighting the importance of faith and community in the origin of this settlement.
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is distinguished by its simple and modest construction. Its architectural style, unpretentious and functional, reflects the practical purpose and community essence of its foundation.
The sobriety of the materials and lines that compose it gives it an authentic character, which integrates harmoniously into the urban fabric of the neighborhood. It is a building that tells, in its discretion, a significant part of local history and life.
