Located on the edge of National Road 10, near Pegões, in the old São Gabriel neighborhood, almost invisible to passersby, but with a rich and curious past.
The church is part of a neighborhood built in 1951 to house the employees of the former Overseas Shortwave Broadcasting Center, active until 2011. The neighborhood also included housing, a school, a canteen, a library, a playground, and leisure areas.
It is in complete abandonment. The church is visibly vandalized, without benches and with clear signs of degradation, although it is still possible to observe remnants of the stained glass windows and some elements of the original architecture.
It is part of a ghost neighborhood with about 22 houses, support buildings and infrastructures now covered by weeds and silence. The feeling of nostalgia is intense for those who visit it. Some houses still keep furniture and signs of past life.
The church is simple, with typical features of the time in which it was built. Outside, the arched porch and the cross on top stand out. Inside, the details have been erased by time and vandalism, but the original structure remains.
It was used as a spiritual and community center for the workers and families of the neighborhood. There are emotional accounts from former residents and visitors who describe happy experiences and important community events held there.
Ideal for those who like to explore abandoned places, with historical and photographic interest. It is not a traditional tourist spot, but rather a silent testimony of a Portugal that existed and was forgotten. Caution is recommended when visiting, as there are no support structures and some buildings may be at risk.
