This bust is a tribute to Alberto Santos-Dumont, a central figure in the history of aviation. Globally recognized as one of the great pioneers in this field and a patron of Brazilian aeronautics, his vision and ingenuity contributed significantly to the development of flight. The monument commemorates the lasting impact of his innovations and his influence on technological progress and human exploration.
The monument consists of a bronze bust, approximately two meters high, resting on a pedestal. At the base, an inscription summarizes the importance of the honored figure: "Father of Aviation gave wings to the world and glory to Brazil." This inscription highlights Santos-Dumont's fundamental role in conquering the skies and the significance of his figure for Brazil, serving as an artistic representation of his legacy.
The presence of this bust in Montijo is the result of a gesture of cooperation and friendship between Portugal and Brazil. The piece was offered to the Montijo City Council by the diplomatic representative of the Federative Republic of Brazil in Portugal. The handover ceremony took place on December 12, 1973, as part of the commemorations of the Discovery of Brazil, emphasizing the historical and cultural ties that unite the two countries. The bust was received by the then Mayor, José Maria Barros Martins, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force, lending additional symbolism related to aviation and defense.
