The City Park is located in the Bairro 25 de Abril, in the town of Barreiro. Its central location in the urban area provides easy access and harmonious integration into the city fabric. From the park, it is possible to enjoy views of the Coina river and the surrounding urban areas, offering an interesting perspective on the environment.
This green space has a rich history that dates back to the former Quinta da Maceda, a property that once belonged to the Counts of Castelo Melhor. In 1927, the land was acquired for the installation of the Granadeiro cork factory, one of the largest and best-equipped in Barreiro at the time.
Elements such as the firebrick chimney and the old refectory, which is now the Edifício Américo Marinho, still remain from the original industrial complex. This building, integrated into the park, now plays a cultural role, hosting various activities. The space was acquired by the Municipality in 1985 and, after a period of redevelopment, opened to the public as the City Park in 2000.
With an area of approximately 89,000 square meters, the park is distinguished by its appreciable ecological diversity. Dry and humid systems coexist within it, including mounds, slopes, and flattened low-lying areas, creating a varied and dynamic environment.
The tree cover is composed of a wide range of plant species, such as ash trees, carob trees, pine trees, alder trees, oak trees, mulberry trees, linden trees, and cork oaks. Two lakes, connected by a small waterfall, are a scenic element that contributes to the tranquility and natural beauty of the place.
The City Park was designed to be a privileged place for leisure and the practice of different sports. It has a picnic area, four tennis courts, and large lawns that invite the practice of various sports.
For entertainment, the park includes a playground, skate and mountain bike tracks, and a climbing wall. There are also spaces dedicated to traditional games and an outdoor chess area, promoting interaction and fun for all ages.
An integral part of the City Park is the Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita, a cultural hub inaugurated in 2003. This multifunctional space, with a performance hall, hosts a varied program that includes film screenings, theater, dance, and music performances, among other cultural events.
The park is also enriched with various sculptures and monuments, which can be found near the auditorium and next to an arboretum, adding elements of art and contemplation to visitors' paths.
