The French Garden is located within the CUF Workers' Quarter, a residential area with distinctive historical features, situated in the city of Barreiro. Its position in this peaceful neighbourhood offers an inviting atmosphere, easily accessible to those exploring the locality.
This garden, with its unique history, is considered one of the oldest green spaces in Barreiro. Its origin is thought to date back to 1922, having undergone a significant expansion in the 1930s, incorporating the grounds of what was once the city's first cemetery. A notable feature is the bandstand, also dating from 1922, whose construction ingeniously repurposed public lighting poles from that era. The garden opened to the public sometime between 1920 and 1930, becoming since then a meeting point and a place of memory for the community.
With an area of approximately 5000 square meters, the French Garden presents a romantic style, inviting visitors to take calm strolls along its meandering paths. Its landscape is enriched by diverse and emblematic tree cover, notably featuring imposing jacarandas, tipuana trees, and beautiful shaded areas. In addition to the aforementioned bandstand, the garden features a serene lake, contributing to the space's relaxing and natural atmosphere.
More than just a simple green space, the French Garden offers a true refuge in the urban environment. It is a place that invites reflection and a pause from the fast pace of daily life. Here, the gentle sound of birds and the rustling of wind in the tree leaves create an immediate connection with nature, contributing to the well-being of visitors. The garden's rich arboreal heritage is, in itself, a reason for appreciation, resembling a small botanical sanctuary within the city.
