History and Architecture

Founded in 1569 by the Brotherhood of Mercy, this temple is a testament to the historical richness of Barreiro. Its façade displays a notable Mannerist style, easily identifiable by its main portal. This is richly ornamented, featuring elements such as a carved shell and cherubs, and bears an inscription paying homage to Isabel Pires de Azambuja, a figure who distinguished herself as a patron and benefactor of the church.

The Interior and the Art of Azulejo

Inside, the church reveals a simplicity that invites introspection, but it is enriched by a remarkable set of 18th-century azulejos. These detailed ceramic panels narrate significant moments from the life of Saint John the Baptist, illustrating scenes from his birth and childhood to episodes of his preaching, providing a visual journey through the saint's iconography. This azulejo narrative extends throughout the main chapel, further delving into the life episodes of the patron saint.

Artistic Elements and Symbolism

Among the noteworthy details inside is the pulpit, also dating from the 18th century. This element is exquisitely decorated with the depiction of an angel's head and elaborate plant motifs. Above the door providing access to the pulpit, one can see the figure of the Holy Spirit, a symbol of spiritual significance that enriches the atmosphere. In contrast to the narrative azulejos, the high altar stands out for its valuable 17th-century altarpiece, which houses a significant painting of Our Lady of Mercy, the temple's central piece of devotion.
