The Casa da Cultura is situated in the CUF Workers' Quarter, an area of Barreiro with a strong connection to the industrial history of the locality. This quarter, once the epicenter of the Companhia União Fabril's activity, offers a glimpse into the city's factory past, with its characteristic housing and infrastructure created for workers. The presence of the Casa da Cultura in this context enriches the experience, linking culture to Barreiro's industrial heritage.
The building housing the Casa da Cultura possesses a rich and varied history, mirroring the social and economic transformations of Barreiro. Originally known as the CUF Cinema, it served as an important leisure and social hub for the working community and residents in general. Over the years, it was also designated as the House of Culture of Quimigal and, subsequently, Quimiparque, reflecting the various phases of local industrial management. This space, laden with memories, remains a cultural symbol for several generations of the city.
With a remarkable capacity for around a thousand people, the Casa da Cultura stands out as one of the largest performance venues on the south bank of the Tagus River and, indeed, in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Its size allows it to host large-format events, a characteristic that has made it, over the decades, a privileged space for the presentation of diverse forms of art and culture. The building's amplitude and structure reflect its original purpose as a grand cinema and a performance hall, prepared to welcome a vast and diverse audience.
