The Auditório José Afonso is located in the Troino area, in Setúbal, situated in Largo José Afonso, next to Avenida Luísa Todi. Its urban yet uncrowded location contributes to the experience of an outdoor cultural and leisure space, integrated into the city's dynamics.
This location offers a setting that allows for the full appreciation of its structure, being easily accessible within the urban fabric of Setúbal.
Inaugurated in November 2005, the Auditório José Afonso distinguishes itself by its architecture. It is characterized by a striking structure in the shape of a large scenic arch, which functions as a gateway approximately 20 meters high. This architectural design is not merely aesthetic, also serving as robust support for the stage.
The structure integrates a motorized metal grid, designed to allow adaptation to the diverse technical needs of performances. With a capacity to host up to 2500 people, the auditorium was built as part of the "Viver Setúbal, POLIS" program, reflecting the commitment to the city's cultural development.
The Auditório José Afonso is a recreational cultural space dedicated to the performing arts, functioning as an open-air auditorium. Throughout the year, and with particular intensity during the summer months, this stage hosts a variety of events. Its program includes music performances, theater plays, and various festivals, among other entertainment activities.
Its nature as an open-air space provides a relaxed atmosphere for the audience, ideal for enjoying artistic manifestations under the Setúbal sky.
One of the most notable features of the auditorium is the mural that adorns its south gable. In March 2014, urban artist Sérgio Odeith created an impressive work of art on this facade. The mural, known as "O Rapaz dos Pássaros" (The Boy with the Birds), is a reproduction of a photograph from the early 20th century, belonging to the collection of the Américo Ribeiro Photographic Archive, which depicts a boy selling birds.
This initiative was a tribute to the Setúbal photographer Américo Ribeiro. The significance of Odeith's work was internationally recognized, having been chosen in 2014, by the I Support Street Art movement, as one of the 24 best murals in the world. This aspect lends the auditorium the dimension of an urban art gallery, visible to passers-by.
