The Aposento do Barrete Verde de Alcochete is located in the Bairro 25 de Abril, an urban area of the village of Alcochete. It is situated on Rua José André dos Santos, an address that places it in the heart of the local community, reflecting its intrinsic connection to the traditions and daily life of this riverside village.
Founded in 1944, the Aposento do Barrete Verde was established with the purpose of safeguarding Alcochete's traditions. Its creation aimed, in particular, at organizing the village's annual festivities, which focus on the celebration of the festa brava. Over the decades, this space has become a pillar in the preservation and promotion of the region's cultural and popular heritage, consolidating its importance within the local community.
The Aposento do Barrete Verde is the driving force behind the emblematic Festas do Barrete Verde e das Salinas, one of the highlights of Alcochete's calendar. Over the years, these celebrations have been enriched with the introduction of distinctive elements, such as the devotion to Nossa Senora da Vida, initiated in 1965. It was also in this context that, starting in 1967, the first largadas nocturnas and the popular noite da sardinha assada took place, which quickly became one of the most anticipated and memorable moments of the festivities.
Inside the Aposento, visitors will find a space dedicated to local memory and history, with three museum rooms created in the early 1960s. These rooms evoke central figures of regional identity: the salineiro, symbolizing Alcochete's connection to the salt pans; the forcado; and the cavaleiro, representing the village's strong bullfighting tradition.
An integral part of the Aposento is the Grupo de Forcados Amadores do Aposento do Barrete Verde, formed in 1965. This group stands out in the bullfighting scene for a unique particularity: all eight of its members wear the characteristic green beret during the pega, a detail that differentiates it from other groups and underscores its identity.
