The Old Montijo Railway Station is located in the heart of the Bairro da Calçada, in the city of Montijo. The site is situated along the route of the old railway line, now converted into a cycling path, making it part of a contemporary urban route. Its presence recalls the area's railway past, while integrating into the current urban fabric.
The Old Montijo Railway Station, once known as Aldegallega, was inaugurated on October 4, 1908. It was the central point of the Ramal do Montijo (Montijo Branch Line), a crucial railway link between the city and Pinhal Novo. This interface played a vital role in the region's economic development, facilitating the transport of goods, particularly swine livestock from Alentejo, which significantly boosted local industry. After decades of service, circulation on the branch line was suspended in 1989, marking the end of its railway function.
Currently, the Old Montijo Railway Station is undergoing a requalification process. The existing buildings are being restored to host new social, cultural, and tourism support activities, integrating into the cycling path that now occupies the former railway bed. This project aims not only to preserve the site's memory but also to create new spaces for community interaction and leisure for residents and visitors, with new green spaces planned for the surrounding area.
