The Old Canha Railway Station is located in the municipality of Montijo, in the district of Setúbal. This historical structure is situated in an environment that combines the tranquility of the rural setting with its proximity to the town of Canha, being about six to seven kilometers away. Its position, in a more open area of the territory, provides it with a serene and distinctive setting, away from the hustle and bustle of urban centers. The main station building is strategically positioned southeast of the old railway line, offering a perspective on the route that trains once traveled, marking the landscape with its singular presence.

Memory and Railway Heritage

Inaugurated on January 15, 1904, Canha Station was a crucial link on the historic Vendas Novas Line. For several decades, this site was a vibrant hub of activity, functioning as an essential interface for the transport of passengers and goods, connecting the region to the national railway network. Its platforms, now silent, and the structure of the main building are physical testimonies to the fundamental role it played in the development and mobility of local communities. Passenger train service at this station ceased in 2011, but its legacy of stories and experiences, intrinsically linked to the railway, remains etched in its architecture and in the collective imagination.

A New Chapter for the Station

Currently, the Old Canha Railway Station is embarking on a promising transformation process, pointing towards a renewed future. There is a requalification project led by the local municipality, which aims to rehabilitate the buildings and the entire surrounding area, honoring its memory while projecting it for new functions. The objective is to revitalize this space with social, cultural, and tourist initiatives, giving it a new dynamic. This vision for the future integrates harmoniously with the recent completion of a cycle path in the area, and the creation of a new green space is also planned, thus contributing to enhancing the surroundings and providing a new leisure and interest area for visitors to Canha and the municipality of Montijo.
