The medieval bridge of Alvalade is located in the eponymous village, in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, extending over the old bed of the Ribeira de Campilhas (Campilhas Stream). It is situated a short distance from the parish of Alvalade, accessible by a path that leads away from the village center. Its presence is a striking element in the surrounding landscape, natural and serene in character, inviting an experience of contact with history in a tranquil environment.
This remarkable monument possibly has its roots in the Roman period, although it underwent significant interventions and major works in the 16th century. For centuries, the bridge played a crucial role as part of a prominent road system, connecting ancient cities such as Miróbriga, Pax Iulia (present-day Beja), and Vipasca (Aljustrel). It was a vital communication axis, maintaining its importance in both the Roman period and the Middle Ages.
Although it no longer serves as the primary means of crossing the stream, the bridge is today a valuable Property of Municipal Interest, a classification it obtained in 2004. During restoration works carried out in 2001, elements were discovered that further reveal its rich history. Among them, a property marker of the Order of Santiago, which was found next to the structure, and an unusual stone block on the upper part of the side wall, which was likely used by ancient users of the bridge to sharpen their tools.
The medieval bridge of Alvalade is one of the most interesting monuments in the region and a true symbol of the time that has passed there. Its solidity and its architecture, though simple, tell stories of ancient journeys and routes. It is a place that invites reflection on the evolution of paths and communities, remaining a living memory of a connecting route that marked the landscape and the lives of people throughout successive eras. Its presence, in harmony with the surrounding nature, offers a unique perspective on the local heritage.
