Located in Alto do Seixalinho, on Rua do Convento, this historic space is surrounded by a tranquil urban context. The Portuguese cobblestone pavement and the landscaped areas create a serene atmosphere, where the distant sound of the city blends with the silence of the cloisters.
Surrounding it are predominantly residential areas and small green spaces, giving the building a discreet yet striking presence in the fabric of Barreiro.
Its construction began in 1591, under the patronage of Dona Francisca de Azambuja, and continued until the early 17th century. It was the seventeenth convent of the Province of Santa Maria da Arrábida, succeeding the old monastery near the Coina River.
In the 18th century, it gained an upper floor for dormitories and the Chapel of Senhor dos Passos, as a result of a significant renovation. After the extinction of religious orders in 1834, it became an estate and fell into a state of ruin until it was restored in the late 20th century.
The aesthetic follows the Franciscan principles of simplicity and austerity, with whitewashed façades, sober lines, and an absence of exuberant decoration. The cloister features discreet arches supported by robust columns and wide corridors that invite contemplation.
The central cobblestone courtyard houses a fountain surrounded by olive trees and aromatic herbs. This open space serves as a photographic spot, where the contrasts of light and shadow enhance the building's historical character.
