Situated in the historic center of Almada, specifically in Largo 1º de Maio, the Matriz Church of Santiago holds a prominent place for the locality. Its position in Almada's ancient core provides it with a serene environment, framed within the urban landscape.
The origins of the Matriz Church of Santiago date back to the 12th century, suggesting its antiquity from the early days of the Christian reconquest. Throughout the centuries, its history was intrinsically linked to the Order of Santiago, to which it belonged, a detail reflected in the symbolism present in the building. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 caused significant damage, but the church underwent a notable reconstruction in the 18th century, regaining its grandeur. This rehabilitation was driven, among others, by António Francisco de Bragança, marking a new phase in the building's life. Archaeological discoveries made in 1981 and 1993 in its atrium revealed vestiges of burials dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries, confirming the profound antiquity and continuous use of the site.
The facade of the Matriz Church of Santiago exhibits a neoclassical style, a result of the 18th-century reconstruction, which lends it an elegant sobriety. A distinctive element on the front is the presence of the coat of arms with the sword of Santiago cross, a symbol of the Order that marked its history. Inside, the church reveals a rich artistic expression and historical details. Visitors can observe 17th-century tile panels that cover part of the interior, enriching the space. Particularly noteworthy are the panels depicting moments from the legend of Santiago, possibly attributed to Nicolau de Freitas. The main chapel, one of the church's most sacred spaces, is crowned by a vault with characteristics of the late Manueline style, adding a layer of architectural complexity to the ensemble.
