The bandstand is located in the Castle area, in the heart of the city of Almada. It is elegantly situated in the picturesque Castle Garden, a green space with 19th-century trees that invites leisurely strolls. Its elevated position in the urban development allows the garden where it is located to offer unobstructed views of the Tagus estuary and the city of Lisbon, framing the bandstand in a setting of great scenic beauty.
This bandstand, over a century old, is a prominent element in Almada's history. Since its inauguration in 1868, it has been a privileged stage for music and the community's social life. Over time, it underwent restoration and, in the mid-1930s, it was even enlarged, adapting to the needs and growing importance it held as a cultural and social hub.
The bandstand in the Castle Garden was, for many years, the central point of popular festivities, such as the traditional São João festivals, which filled the garden with life on June nights. It was here that local philharmonic bands, such as "Incrível Almadense" and "Academia Almadense," performed concerts, sometimes marked by healthy rivalry. These musical moments and the strolls around the bandstand, where a waltz or a polka was once danced, reflect Almada's strong tradition of social gatherings and cultural identity, transforming it into a true repository of collective memories.
Even today, the bandstand maintains its musical vocation. It continues to be an active space, regularly hosting concerts by philharmonic bands and other cultural initiatives, especially during the month of music. This continuity ensures that the bandstand remains a meeting and celebration point, honoring its legacy and contributing to the cultural dynamics of the locality of Almada.
