Located in the center of Alcochete, in Largo de São João, this church is one of the most important monuments in the town and the municipality.
The church was built in the 15th century, at a time when Alcochete was an important center of the Order of Santiago. Its construction is associated with Infante D. Fernando, father of D. Manuel I.
In 1910, the church was classified as a National Monument, recognizing its historical and cultural importance.
The church's facade is in the Gothic style and features a portal with three archivolts, decorated by a large rose window. The bell tower is one of the most prominent elements of the church.
The temple is adorned with symbols of the Orders of Santiago and Christ, which are visible in the decoration of the church, namely on the gable of the main portal.
The church underwent several modifications over time, including the construction of the chapels of Pêro Lourenço and Maria Lopes. These modifications reflected the influence of the Manueline style.
In the 1940s, the church underwent restoration work, which altered some of its original characteristics.
The main altar of the church was renovated in 1678, during major restoration works.
