This cultural space is situated in the heart of Alcochete's historic centre. Its central location, in the former Church of Misericórdia, is set in a quiet area of the town, close to the Tagus river and inviting a stroll through the surrounding streets, before or after the visit.
The Sacred Art Centre is housed within the dependencies of the historic Church of Misericórdia in Alcochete. The original building underwent restoration and adaptation works to accommodate this collection, becoming the place where, since 1993, the collection has been presented to the public, continuing the cultural life of this historically valuable property.
The collection gathered in this museum centre is dedicated to sacred art, with a particular focus on painting. The collection allows for tracing a journey through the artistic production of religious themes over several centuries, featuring works dating from the 16th to the early 20th century.
Among the exhibited works, some elements stand out for their historical and artistic importance. Visitors can appreciate a remarkable Mannerist altarpiece, attributed to the mastery of the painter Diogo Teixeira. Equally relevant is the Misericórdia Banner included in the collection, recognized as one of the oldest known in Portuguese territory, a rare testimony to the history of these institutions.
